I found a tiny straw hat for cats in the local pet store. You'd think the cats would be pleased I think of them, but nope, all three are straight up ignoring me after my attempts to make them look fabulous.
It's Midsummer (or Midwinter if you're down south), which means we're about halfway through the year! How are we all doing on our New Year's resolutions? That good, eh?
The discord server was hopping this week, with Manta Rays hanging out, competitive writing sprints, and even some non-competitive writing sprints happening almost every day! Did you know that you can hop into the sprint room in our server and sprint any time you want? Anyone can operate the Sprinto bot with either slash commands or tagging the bot and giving the commands. Most of the time, there is an admin around to help you, and maybe even sprint with you! If you have ADHD, you may have heard of body doubling, and doing writing sprints is one way to do that. For a lot of people, it's just easier to get some writing done while sprinting, even if it's just by yourself. You're kind of holding yourself accountable, and the Sprinto bot keeps time for you and even gives you a lovely quote at the end! Be sure to check it out and ask the admins if you need help!
There was no New Member Spotlight for June, as we had no new members by the time we would usually have posted it. However, we've gotten a few new members this weekend, so July's post will be chock full of new people to meet!

The streaming giant says it's phasing out the $9.99 "basic" option from its price plans, taking away the cheapest subscription without ads.
That means new Netflix subscribers will have to decide whether they're ready to sit through commercial breaks or fork out a bit more money for an ad-free experience.
Netflix's ad tier costs $5.99 and allows viewing on up to two screens at once with commercial interruptions.
The next level up is $16.49 per month to watch without ads, with simultaneous viewing on two devices. There's also the premium plan for $20.99 with 4K high-definition video and the option to add up to two members who don't live in their household.
Note from poster @el-shab-hussein: Remember what happened last time? When they cracked down on password sharing on Canada first because they use Canadians as a testing grounds for what they want to implement on bigger populations? This is going to happen to the Netflix services in other countries if they think this measure is successful. We're just consumer guinea pigs in this story.

I have been seeing more and more threads over the last few days that are either deliberately or unintentionally using the current AO3 drama to scaremonger and turn public opinion against the archive.
Words like
👉 ABUSE
👉 CHILD PORN
👉 CRIMINAL/ILLEGAL
These words are being used to short circuit your brain and force you into an emotional reaction before you have the information to come to a reasoned conclusion about the facts.
What is actually happening?
Archive volunteers (all AO3 labor is volunteered, there are no paid employees) were exposed to images of Child Sexual Abuse during a violent, terroristic attack by malicious actors against the archive. Additionally, malicious actors continue to attempt to upload links to AO3 containing images of CSAM hosted off site.
The allegations of abuse are that AO3 and its parent organization OTW did not sufficiently protect itself (its volunteers) from the images that were used to attack it.
⭐ AO3 is being accused of failing to sufficiently protect itself, and being called criminal for it. On an individual level rather than an organizational level we would call this 'victim blaming'.
⭐ There is a rumor that AO3 is somehow in criminal violation of the law and is coded in such a way that it cannot comply with the law.
⭐ This rumor is false.
AO3 has already clarified that they are confident they are not in violation of the law.
Yet rumors continue to spread and scare people away from using the archive.
This is potentially intentional!
This is potentially a campaign to fearmonger, sew discord, and shake support for the archive.
Please do not fall prey to fearmongering rumors, and investigate the situation for yourself.
